The Wild Atlantic Way

Cycling through the most dramatic scenery of Ireland

The Wild Atlantic Way is a designated tourist route which stretches from Donegal to Cork all along the West coast of Ireland and has been chosen to pass through the most scenic areas of the west of Ireland.

Westport Bike Hire are situated right on the route as it passes through Westport (past our front door) and if you fancy a day, week or even longer cycling along part, or all of this route, around the Clew Bay area then please get in touch with us and we will assist you in every way with bike hire, accommodation details together with any information you may need for your Wild Atlantic Way cycling adventure.

The Wild Atlantic Way  is a well researched and chosen route which will give its visitors an experience of travelling through and on a wild, spectacular and historic journey through an Ireland which is steeped in celtic myths and folklore.  A magical tour of not only breath taking scenery but through an ancient, sometimes tragic, but nevertheless warming journey of traditional music, food, drink and enjoying the craic with what are a unique type of people that inhabit what must be one of the last remaining unspoilt areas of Ireland together with its wild life and unique Atlantic fauna.

The route is of course coastal and you can drive, walk and cycle all or part of the routes any time of the year including in the winter.  Although sometimes stormy, which is a fascinating experience itself to see an Atlantic storm, the weather on the whole can be quite mild due to the Gulf stream which runs off the coast.  In the warmer months of the year there is no better place on earth where you can enjoy fresh air, unpolluted sea, and miles upon miles of wide open beaches.  Apart from the coastal cliffs and beaches you will be travelling through natural bog, mountain ranges and alongside loughs and sparkling rivers  bursting with trout and Atlantic salmon.

If you look out for the signs which are every where and are a unique wriggly line, then it will be impossible to lose your way.

You will find that large parts of the Wild Atlantic Way include designated hiking and cycling routes alongside the roads which are very well signposted.  In fact in the Clew Bay area you will find  the Wild Atlantic Way and the Great Western Greenway (which is a designated walking and cycling route) run either alongside each other or are actually the same route.

So there is no better way to spend a day or two cycling these routes just in Clew Bay alone, all the way from the tip of Achill Island to Louisburgh. We are perfectly situated in the middle and can supply all the information so you can arrange your route and overnight accommodation if you require before you leave our depot.  Or you can simply leave your hire bike or start your journey at a designated venue along this route and we can arrange transport for you in our shuttlebus .

We may be a little biased but we think from Achill Island around Clew Bay and along the coast of Connemara down to Galway has to be the best or on par with the best of the Atlantic Way, and for you the visitor to the area you are actually very well spoilt in the amount of great accommodation and facilities including our bike hire services in this area. So just give us a call and we are certain you will not be disapointed at any time of the year when visiting this area.
